Day 9
August 11
Wayne and Tim went to pick up the car from the train station. We had rented a gps but couldn't get it to work in the city. It was a good thing Tim likes maps because he brought his big map book which got us out of the city.
It was a pretty drive to the French city of Bayeux. It was really close the D-day action in WWII.
It has a cathedral. It was hit during the war, but fortuately not badly damaged.

It is a very quaint little city.
After dinner we drove around a little and found the British Museum. It was closed so we just walked around the small grounds in front of the museum.
There is a memorial down on Omaha Beach. Seeing the memorial you have to feel some reverence for the fight for freedom that took place here and other beach on France's coast.

After our breakfast of French pastries we headed to the American war cemetry.

It is very beautiful done. It truly honors those who died.
It was a cloudy. It tried to rain and then the sun tried to come out.
The rows of crosses are so perfectly lined up. I believe there are over 9,000 Americans buried here. The French had less than 20 die during this battle. Really??? I find that hard to understand since it took place in their country for their freedom.
We then went back to the British Museum. It was interesting to see their persective. Just about the time we were leaving I heard someone call my name. It was Marikate Wissman. She is a teacher at my school. I knew she was going to Germany this summer. I didn't know she was also going to spend time in France. Who would have thought I would see someone I knew in a foreign country?
